Currently, diabetes is considered a public health problem due to the high number of people with the disease.

However, when properly treated and controlled, it allows a perfectly normal life.

Diabetes mellitus, or simply diabetes, is a disorder in metabolism which causes a total deficiency or insulin production part, which is a hormone produced by the pancreas. Insulin has the function of regulating the amount of glucose in the body. It is through the action of insulin that glucose enters cells.

In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas cells produce little or no insulin and the body can not absorb glucose from the blood, increasing your level. In this case the solution is subcutaneous insulin injection, so it can be absorbed by the blood and perform their duties.

In type 2 diabetes, although the body to produce insulin, muscle and fat cells are unable to take advantage of this insulin secreted by the pancreas and thus make proper use of glucose present in the blood. This is called “insulin resistance”. In this case, the treatment can be done through diet, exercise, and oral medications as needed. There are cases where it is necessary to combine all these with insulin injection according to medical advice.

In gestational diabetes, the woman’s body does not produce sufficient amount of insulin for her and her baby, what triggers the disease. However, following medical guidelines, the baby develops normally and after birth the woman back to his normal state of insulin production.

In all cases, balanced and adequate nutrition is the essential point of the treatment.

Therefore, always consult your doctor and if possible have the help of a nutritionist.

Blood pressure is the force that heart uses to pump blood through the vessels.

The pressure is determined by the volume of blood leaving the heart and the resistance it encounters to circulate in the body.

Blood pressure is considered normal when the systolic (maximum) does not exceed 130 and the diastolic (minimum) is less than 85 mmHg (milimeters of mercury).

The HYPERTENSION is, therefore, blood pressure above normal values, that is, above 140 (maximum) and 90 (minimum) mmHg in adults over 18 years,

To chacacterize the disease, it is necessary that these values are frequent, since elevations may be due to occasional concerns, food, tobacco, alcohol, exercises, coffe, drugs and more ….. If not treated appropriately, this disease can lead to complications which could affect other organs ans systems of our body.

It is estimated that 10-15% of the population in Brazil is affected by hipertension.

Watch out, always check in the nutrition label the amount of sodium in the portions indicated.

ANVISA (National Health Surveillance Agency) recommends daily sodium intake of no more than 2400 mg.

So, try to limit salt (sodium) in your diet. Prefer fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains (oats, wheat, rye, etc..) Try using spices such as garlic, onion, rosemary, coriander, aromatic herbs, lemon, etc….

People with hypertension should be accompained by a doctor and dietitians.
